It appears that the artist worked from a photo, and that's not a bad idea either. For clean natural looking paintings, photographs are a great reference tool. Also, keep in mind that his painting is HUGE. (About 9'x14'.) That allows room for more detail. In any case, it is indeed a work of great talent.

I am in awe of fairly much everything this artist paints... The War Wolf is my favourite of them all though. That snow looks so real it makes me feel cold just looking at the painting.
