No, I can't help myself. Thank you for that
stunning observation.
I don't know why these things pop into my head. They just do. Anyway...
Say there's a tree. Around that tree is a dragon. The dragon chews on the branches, gnawing them away. Destroying them. Let's also say that you are a great knight that came across the tree on your travels. Would you slay the dragon, or would you walk away? And why?

I would walk away. If the dragon is content with its tree then it's not causing harm to anything else, so I would just leave it alone with its tree.
Maybe it's a vegetarian.
mmmm leafy goodness.

Must be a loony one.

Well, if it was that Tree of Life thing in viking mythology that the dragon chews on, I'd try and stop him. I'll be like, "Shooo! Bad dragon; trying to destroy The Great Tree that supports heaven and earth! Very bad!."
If it was a normal tree, I'd be like, "Carry on them. Though I dont think thats good for the tree." Then I'd pet him
edit: Oh yeah! 1400th post! Booyay!

allright! Nidhogg and Yggdrasill! Norce mythology refrence! bonus points!
anyway...
I'd prohaply just ask why he was doing it, assuming he's one of those smart dragons that can communicate. If the dragons says something like "I need the wood from this tree to complete my evil plan to rain death down upon all life!", then i'd prolly go Lanceolot on his scaly a**. If he just says something like "I'm just cleaning my teeth." then i'd let him be.

Assuming (as Lyco pointed out) that the dragon isn't up to something bad, I'd leave him alone.
If he doesn't have any ulterior motives, I'm not gonna stop him. Personally, I value the lives of most animals above the lives of most plants. And I've never considered dragons to be inherently evil, so I have no reason to kill it.
Now...if he was chewing up the plants in my garden or something, I might do something about. I probably wouldn't kill him, but I would at least find a way to deter him from destroying my plants.

Non-interferance for the time being, as the tree and dragon are both part of the regional ecology. Knight or not, I'm also a biologist. I'd stick around and observe with fascination.
I'd simply be astonished to see a live dragon. Let alone wonder how it came to be that I'm now a Knight of the Realm.
