From what I understand, there isn't actually any benefit to creating flourescent green pigs. However, by doing so, they are improving their technique for making genetic changes in animals. So, while these particular pigs won't have much use, they have opened the doors for future pigs to be useful. The reason GFP is used is because it's totally obvious whether you succeeded in making the change or not. As an example of transgenics already yielding some benefit, some of the transgenic goats at LSU have been engineered so that certain substances necessary to make medicines will be produced in their milk. I forgot the specifics, but you get the idea.

Having said that, I see lots of doors opening for the creation of hairless, flourescent pets. I'd love to have one of those hairless sphinx cats if it glowed.

Something in the article caught my eye.

"The transgenic pigs, commonly used to study human diseases, would help researchers monitor and trace changes of the tissues during the physical development, Wu said."

That might be why they would create these animals. Or at least that's my understanding, but Renorei did have a good point as well. This will most likely serve as a stepping stone to the future of genetic engineering.

Sorry if there are any misspellings or typos. I have been up WAY to late.

Wow. Science sure can do a lot of weird things these days. :D

Soon, if you need a new ear, they'll just grow it on a mouse for ya.

That pig...Heeeeeey...It looks like someone colored his nose and feet with a highlighter. I smell a conspiracy!

Just kidding (of course!) :jester:
