Don't confuse being stupid with being gullible. There are plenty of intelligent people in the South, but the South is also classically referred to as the Bible Belt. The simple explanation is that Republicans are more successful in the South because their campaigns often rely on a policy of forced Christianity.
Sorry if I'm offending anyone, but I don't see any politicians in the Republican party. I see elitists and businessmen masquerading as politicians on a campaign of fear and Christianity -- "when in doubt, talk about terrorism, abortion and gay marriage."
People from the South aren't stupid, but the whole culture has been brainwashed into believing people are either Christian conservatives, or evil.
So no offense, but if you're so weak that you can't live by your own morals without the government making them laws, that doesn't necessarilly make you stupid, but don't act surprised when anyone pleads the opposite.
