I've tried to write/compose one multiple times over the years...but I allways ended up realising that I'm just not a very good song writer.
As for choosing existing songs...
...eeeenhhh...
I'm too boring to have a good theme song, but if I choose a song about the kind of person I wish I was, the first thing that comes to mind is "Pioneer", one of the theme songs from the Anime "Tenchi Muyo".
It's a cheezy song, but it sings about breaking out of a hum-drum life, ignoring everyone who tells you what you Can't do, and go out exploring the universe...not letting Anyone or Anything stand in your way.

"...You can't be a Hero hiding underneath your bed...
...got to live the life you create inside your head...
So I opened the window...caught the wind one night...
Now I sail with the birds in thier flight..."

If I could pick my theme song, it would be this.
But if I had to pick one based on the lyrics and how they relate to my life at the moment, it would probably be "Capricorn" by 30 Seconds to Mars.

Hmm, I can't settle on one, and they change all the time. But:
Drag by Placebo would be a fave at the moment, followed by The Seduction by He Is Legend.
OR Any of these instrumentals (no lyrics) -
The Opinionated Are So Opinionated by Poison The Well
Just Like You Imagined, La Mer, or A Warm Place by Nine Inch Nails

The Cult: "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon"
Embrace the wind with both arms;
Touch the clouds in the sky.
Hang your head no more,
And beg no more.
Brother wolf and sister moon,
Your time has come.
Brother wolf and sister moon,
Your time has come.
And the wind will blow my fears away...
...Will drive my tears away
...And the wind will blow my fears away,
And dry my tears away.
Embrace the wind with both arms;
Touch the clouds in the sky.
Hang your head no more,
And beg no more.
Brother wolf and sister moon,
Your time has come.
Brother wolf and sister moon,
Your time has come.
And the wind will blow my fears away...
...Will drive my tears away
...And the wind will blow my fears away,
And dry my tears away.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

I don't know if I can precisely choose any song that could fit me as a theme song, but I do know of songs that I can relate to, and I suppose those will do for now.
One is Return to Innocence by Enigma. A You-Tube link can be found here.
I interpret "returning to innocence" as "knowing/being yourself," and never letting anything get in the way. There may not be as much lyrics in the song as many others (or at least, lyrics that are in English.), but I connect with what is said, and I think it's important that others can too. If you want, I can also give you a link to some lyrics here.
Another is Anywhere Is by Enya (whom I think is a wonderful artist.). A You-Tube link can be found here.
I interpret this song as being about life, and always trying to find your way without ever seeming to know where you want to go, or if you can get there -- but nonetheless you are always moving throughout life, with life. I feel it is a beautiful song, that I can also relate to, and certainly one of my favourites. If you want, I can also give you song lyrics to this song here.
