Rick goes on to quote Forust Gump’s memorable line, “Stupid is as stupid does.” He then explains that the great companies are not so great, they are just “less stupid” than those that have failed--usually because of stupid mistakes. He then fills his book with incredibly detailed examples of the stupid mistakes made by some of the industry’s most well-known companies. Examples come from IBM, Digital Research, Apple, MicroPro, Ashton Tate, SPC, WordPerfect, Borland, Motorola, Intel (“What does “Intel Inside’ mean - A warning label), and the list goes on. Apparently, there is plenty of stupidity to go around.

Being a certified PC technician myself, my opinion tends to go with most othr techs...

Intel: Better for high-workload long-term usage, such as high-end business machine work - data-processing, database organization, accounting, etc.

AMD: Better for high-speed short-term usage, such as the typical home computer and entertainment enthusiast - gaming, music, graphic design, etc.

Basically, it all depends on what your box will be doing, as to what set of brains you need to stuff in it.

The Intel on AMD

Post by Scott Gardener »

On the overused warning label:

I've discovered what I believe to be the LEAST used or neccessary prompt in existance. When I go to a drive-up ATM, it will give me the prompt, "please take your money." Has anyone ever said, "nah, I'll leave it for the next guy"? Maybe the person driving off in a gold Lamborghini Murcielago, after he lowers that upward-raising door and roars off at 0-60 in just under four seconds.

On the questioning of gathered Intel:

About three years ago, I could say that AMD was more bang for your buck--for the same price you could get more processor. It's actually still true, but less applicable, as more people are going to laptops as a primary computer, and not many higher end models use AMD processors. I wish they would, because they could shave a hundred bucks or two off the top of a laptop like mine, or allow a power user to squeeze in that extra oomph of power under the hood.
Taking a Gestalt approach, since it's the "in" thing...

no kidding. Granted the differences in the benchmarks have narrowed a bit, AMD is still less expensvie and better.
