Right now I'll have to go with Dreamtheater.
One only knows that of which they allow themselves to know.

In the eighties, I referred to my favorites as the "Big Four": Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Dokken, and KISS. By 1990, I had added Scorpions, and it became the "Big Five." Granted, even then, my tastes weren't limited to pop metal; I also considered Sting and The Police favorites.
In the early nineties I added early on Queensryche and Dio to the heavy metal lineup, as well as The Cult and Led Zeppelin to the "kind of heavy metal but shouldn't really be pegged there, because they are so much more diverse" genre. I also discovered the Goth movement, and Bauhaus became a favorite. I was thrilled to see them reunite and get to see them in concert. (They have a new album out after 25 years, by the way.)
In the late nineties, Goth and metal came together with Type O Negative. I also discovered The Sisters of Mercy during my medical school years. Yes, in medical school, I was an undercover plain-clothes Goth.
Around the start of this decade, mp3.com introduced me to several independents, like Abney Park, Gossamer, and The Moors. Once the site went under, I had to look harder for independents but discovered a techno band called Underworld. (no relation to the movie series) About two years ago, I finally finished my collection of music by The Cure, a group I intended to discover more back in my medical school days after getting their masterpiece Disintegration.
Right now, the past year or so has been a slow one on acquiring new music, but a few gems have surfaced--mainly the new releases by some of the above-mentioned bands. (In the case of The Moors, it was more at last making available their once out-of-print album, otherwise only found in bits and pieces on bootleg networks like Limewire.) I did a little over a year ago start discovering the hard rock band Moonspell, one of the only rock groups to put out werewolf-heavy material. Sure, Danzig may have a song or two, and Goth groups like Bauhaus or The Cure may have plenty of lyrics that hint at shifting, but Moonspell actually has the word "werewolf" in their first song title on their first album, and the lycanthropic theme seems to permeate their works throughout.

OK,
It's been awhile since my last post, but this is fun. I note that many of you have similar tastes in music and while I wouldn't disagree with anyone's choices, some of my favs didn't end up anyone's list:
RUSH
311
DJ Tiesto
Ferry Corsten
UNKLE
Depeche Mode
Delerium
Enya (don't point...that's rude; especially while snickering )
Gabriel and Dresden
A Tribe Called Quest
Digable Planets
On other lists and was happy to see:
Thievery Corporation
Dead Can Dance (I love Lisa's voice)
DJ Shadow (although not happy with his most recent)
Uh Yeah....

Why do people say they care?
And never ask of your despair?
Why do people say they know?
Then off the cliff and down they go.
Why do people think they're glad?
When deep down inside they're truely sad?
Why am I the only one who sees?
I guess that no one else believes.

Gosh, I have so many...
32 Leaves, Alexisonfire, Alkaline Trio, Anberlin, Bad Religion, Blue October, Blue Man Group, Breaking Benjamin, Celldweller, Chevelle, Circa Survive, The Classic Crime, Death Cab For Cutie, FireFlight, Frou Frou, Hard-Fi, The Hush Sound, Imogen Heap, iiO, Jamiroquai, Kate Ryan, Kill Hannah, The Killers, Linkin Park, Lonestar, Lostprophets, Mae, Moloko, Muse, Mute Math, Paramore, Pendulum, Rascal Flatts, Red, Saosin, Sam Sparro, Search the City, Shiny Toy Guns, SR-71, Switchfoot, Three Days Grace, Voxtrot, Within Temptation, and the Youngblood Brass Band.
My top 3 are without a doubt, though, Mae, The Classic Crime, and Imogen Heap. I can listen to their albums over and over and over again and never tire of them.
I also love country and classical/symphonic band music. Favorite composers include Holst, Ticheli, Hazo, Holsinger, Arnold, Whitacre, Robert W. Smith , Saucedo, Claude T. Smith, Bernstein, Ravel, and Copland.
