*Sigh* I can understand, and agree wholheartedly, but I still wish we didn't have to do it. No matter...

Are you kidding? They're noobs until either Fig tosses a duckie (or few) at them, Set pounces on them, or Lukas throws a duckie bomb at them. Preferably all of the above.

Not no more members...just no unregistered lurkers.

If you find the site, all you have to do is register and log in and you're in.

...it's too bad though. I know I usually like to lurk at a forum for a while before I even THINK about registering, so this is going to turn alot of potential members away before they even get to know what we are about.

Sad we have to do this, as I like some of our archival nature. Still, it does help reduce chances of accidental leaks from getting out too soon, and that keeps the D**** away.

Yes! I totaly understand the way you feel. While some bots are usually intended for usefull purposes... ex: google.com ... There are a greater magority of them that wreak havock throught the web. That was a wise move you have made A. Brownrig! Nice that you are looking out for the better of us!

Odd stuff

Post by RedEye »

Is it just me, or do there seem to be a lot more 'bots around of recent?
Recent is since 01-01-07. I'm seeing them on sites that I never saw a 'bot on before: and it might not BE a 'bot.
I've even seen Spambots on Forums that are so arcane and specific that you have to know that the Forum exists to find it.
Yesterday, there were three 'bots on a Cal-Tech Quantum Physics Forum that requires a member to enlist you to get on it.
There's something odd going on...

I'm glad to hear this. The bots are just getting worse and worse. We CANNOT allow a SINGLE bot or porn site on this board. I have seen far too many site become ghost towns because of spam and bots.

I would think locking ALL threads from being viewed by non-members would be a good idea. I've deleted quite a few guest spam postings lately, in addition to member spambots. I've deleted about 5 or 6 today in the last half hour. I'm getting pissed.

Im gonna have to agree with Kaebora on this one, the spambots have been too overwhelming as of lately. Ive deleted about 10 spam threads in the last 3 days. Thats alot.

WEll that must have been a really bad spambot to post that many times. But we are all working simutanously around the clock to take care of these spambots. When ever I get on the first thing I look for is spam threadz. :|

EDIT: Ok I must have deleted about 20 threads created by the same spambot, and I cant enter in Camp Lycanthrope and HOD thread to delete the spams that are in there, I request permission to have access to all threads so that I may delete any spams thats in there. Thank you.

thats going to do absoultly nothing, since these spam bots can register and post after that, im telling you need to add a type securtiy measuer like this
http://www.130panzer.com/modules.php?gf ... num=922192
this works and prevents a long range of spam bots
like this type of log in screen
http://www.130panzer.com/modules.php?na ... rect=index

-blinks- ohhhh THAT'S why hotmail does that to me -grumbles- damn bots...
That would definatly keep spam bots away, but sometimes real people can't get passed those due to some malfunction thing

There is one silver lining (ow!). That we're attracting spambots means we're high enough in traffic to garner attention. I wonder if the Brownriggs can use that fact as a means of demonstrating support for Freeborn? "I've got a forum of supporters that's big enough to get hit with more than a dozen spam-bots in a single month!"

well I put in an email to a guy that runs a site for WoW as hes a computer genius and will find out with hopefully when I wake up. But I have gone over the members list and have noticed that there are quite a few people who have jioned that haven't posted even a hello.... could this perhaps help bring in spam..like i mean accounts and such...

hope you know what i am talking about...it IS 3 in the morning and sometimes I don't make a whole lot of sense to others.
heh.
